NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting

The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting is intended for all individuals regardless of previous shooting experience.

This basic pistol course provides both classroom and range training.
Course topics include:

  • Firearm safety rules
  • Proper operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols
  • Ammunition knowledge and selection
  • pistol selection and storage
  • Shooting fundamentals
  • Pistol inspection and maintenance
  • Marksmanship, and shooting range safety

Students will complete live fire training and a shooting qualification on the range with NRA Certified Instructors.

Students will receive the NRA Guide:

Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook,
take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination
and
receive a course completion certificate bearing the signature of the NRA Secretary and your NRA Certified Instructor.

NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course

This course teaches the basic knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for the safe use of a rifle for target shooting.

This course includes classroom and range time.

Topics Include:

  • NRA’s rules for safe gun handling
  • Rifle parts and operation
  • ammunition
  • shooting fundamentals
  • range rules
  • shooting from the bench rest, prone, sitting, standing and kneeling positions
  • cleaning
  • additional opportunities for skill development

Students will receive

the Basics of Rifle Shooting handbook,
NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure,
Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet,
take a Basics of Rifle Shooting Student Examination,
and receive a course completion certificate.

NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course

This course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for the safe and proper use of a shotgun while shooting a moving target.

This course includes classroom and range time where students learn how to shoot shotguns at moving targets.

Topics Include:

  • NRA’s rules for safe gun handling;
  • shotgun parts and operation
  • shotgun shell components
  • shotgun shell malfunctions
  • shooting fundamentals
  • range rules
  • shooting at straight away and angled targets
  • cleaning
  • additional opportunities for skill development

NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home Course

This course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential for the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection and self-defense.  This course is for law-abiding adult citizens, as defined by applicable federal, state or local law, and experienced. Prospective participants must produce an NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate.

Students should expect to shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition during the course. Topics Include:

  • basic defensive shooting skills
  • strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation
  • firearms and the law
  • how to choose a handgun for self-defense
  • additional opportunities for skill development

Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection In The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and course completion certificate.

NRA Basics Of Person Protection Outside The Home Course

This course teaches students the knowledge, skills and attitude essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective, and responsible use of a concealed pistol for self-defense outside the home.  

This course is for adult individuals who are not disqualified from possessing a firearm as defined by applicable federal, state or local law and are of good repute and possess defensive pistol skills presented in the NRA Basics Of Personal Protection In The Home Course. Participants should understand the basic legal concepts relating to the use of firearms in self-defense and must know and observe not only general gun safety rules but also those safety principles that are specific to defensive situations.

This course is divided into two sections Basic and Advanced.

Section one is nine hours and discusses:

  • essential knowledge and skills that must be mastered in order to carry, store, and use a firearm safely and effectively for personal protection outside the home.
  • Students spend several hours on the range and shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition during section one.
  • Upon completion of section one students may choose to attend section two.

Section two:

  • Section two is an additional five hours on the range learning advanced shooting skills (approximately 115 rounds of ammunition required)

Students will receive

and appropriate (level one/level two) course completion certificates(s).

NRA Basic Range Safety Officer Course

Develops NRA Certified Range Safety Officers with the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential for organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations.

This course is nine hours long and is conducted in a classroom.

Range Safety Officer candidates will learn:

  • Roles and responsibilities of an RSO
  • Range Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Range inspection; range rules
  • Range briefings; emergency procedures
  • Firearm stoppages and malfunctions

Each Range Safety Officer Candidate will receive an RSO Student Study Guide and a Course Evaluation form.

NOTE: Live ammunition is not allowed in the classroom during this course.
